The aims below describe the educational purposes of a course in Physical Education for the Cambridge IGCSE examination. They are not listed in order of priority.
The aims are to enable candidates to:
develop their knowledge and understanding of the theory underpinning physical performance in a modern world
use and apply this knowledge and understanding to improve their performance
perform in a range of physical activities, developing skills and techniques, and selecting and usingtactics, strategies and/or compositional ideas
understand and appreciate safe practice in physical activity and sport
understand and appreciate the benefit of physical activity and sport for health, fitness and well-being
gain a sound basis for further study in the field of Physical Education.
The assessment will consist of:
50% written assessment in a 1-hour 45-minute exam. The exam is 100 marks and consists of topics on Anatomy and Physiology, Health, Fitness and Training, Skill Acquisition and Psychology, and Social, Cultural and Ethical Influences.
50% practical assessment in four activities, each scored out of 25. The practical exam is 100 marks and is assessed through video content generated through students playing or participating at school, individually, or for their club.
To do this course, you must be able to:
Train and develop fitness
Enjoy the challenge of sport
Work co-operatively with others
Give and receive constructive feedback
After studying GCSE PE, students may wish to pursue Sports, Exercise and Health Science at IB Higher or Standard level or the BTEC Sports and Exercise Science course as part of the International Diploma. Studying Physical Education and Sports Science can lead to careers in Sports Therapy, Sport and Exercise Psychology or Sports Coaching, Marketing, Business, Teaching, and Nutrition. Sport-related careers globally have increased significantly and to meet the demand for this increase Higher Education courses at universities and colleges have multiplied.
