In mathematics, there is an IGCSE qualification that is more challenging in content and thinking than the regular IGCSE called Further Pure IGCSE. A small number of students take this examination in addition to their regular IGCSE.
This option will be subject to confirmation by the mathematics faculty. During Year 9 Term 3, students will study a pre-IGCSE Unit of work and challenging content will be included for some students. The assessment of this challenging content will determine a student's suitability for this Further Pure course.
As a guide, complete mastery of Year 9 mathematics courses indicates readiness for Further Pure IGCSE. Assessment scores of 95% and above in Strand A assessments could be an indicator, but problem-solving and abstraction are also important.
The Further Pure IGCSE Mathematics course stands alone from IGCSE and IB DP courses. As such, there is no requirement to study this course to access Higher Level IB maths courses. It is often better to master the regular IGCSE (and attempt to achieve full marks in the papers - which is not easy to do!) to prepare for Higher Level IB courses.
Very able mathematics students do not have to take this course - it is your choice. It is often good to balance excellence in mathematics with excellence or interest elsewhere, and there is plenty of time in Years 12 and 13 to further hone your mathematical knowledge.
Please check the course details and specification.
