This course is designed for native or near-native speakers of Chinese.

Apart from developing language skills through studying variety of texts, students will explore Chinese literature, while also enhancing their knowledge of Chinese culture, history and philosophy. Students studying this course will be in a strong position to promote their educational and employment prospects. Students following this programme will sit the IGCSE Chinese First Language examination at the end of Year 11. This is the course to help students to move towards bilingual diploma in IBDP.

First Language Examination

• Paper 1 (50%): Reading, Directed Writing and Classical Chinese (2 hours 15 mins)

• Paper 2 (50%): Writing (2 hours)

The course aims to improve students’ confidence in expressing themselves in Chinese and places an emphasis on accuracy, appropriateness and effectiveness in both written and oral communication. Students will explore a wide variety of texts, while also enhancing their knowledge of Chinese culture. Students studying this course will be in a good position to promote their educational and employment prospects. Students following this programme will sit the IGCSE Chinese Second Language examination at the end of Year 11. This is the course to help students to move towards IBDP Chinese B Higher Level and Standard Level in Group 2.

Second Language Examination

• Paper 1 (60%): Reading and writing (2 hours)

• Paper 2 (20%): Listening (35-45 minutes)

• Paper 3 (20%): Speaking (10-13 minutes)

The course will introduce students to many aspects of Chinese through the language and culture. Students will develop the four basic language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing through a variety of different activities. We aim to build on what students have already learnt in Years 7 to 9, but we put a special emphasis on further developing students’ four language skills to a higher standard, so that they can use language more confidently and in a more complex and sophisticated context. Students following this programme will be prepared to sit the IGCSE Chinese Foreign Language examination at the end of Year 11. This course supports the majority of the students to move towards IBDP Chinese B Standard Level in Group 2.

Foreign Language Examination

• Paper 1 (25%): Listening (Approximately 40 minutes)

• Paper 2 (25%): Reading (1 hour 15 minutes)

• Paper 3 (25%): Speaking (Approximately 10 minutes)

• Paper 4 (25%): Writing (1 hour 15 minutes)

1. The learning pathways:

Under ESF policy, the Chinese pathway spans the entire learning journey from PYP through MYP, IGCSE, and DP. Students’ IGCSE pathways are determined by a careful evaluation of their language profile, experience in the MYP Chinese programme, and overall performance in Year 9 formative and summative assessments.
