Students will complete the Pearson BTEC International Level 2 Award in Creative Media with a focus on Digital Design; delivered through the Technology Faculty.
BTEC Digital Design is an exciting design course with 21st-century technology at its core. It's a qualification that’s designed with industry in mind and for students who are considering a career in the creative industries. This qualification is an ideal course for students who have an interest in digital design, including graphic design, UI/UX, animation and illustration. Throughout the course, students learn to create modern digital outcomes such as Mobile Apps, Animations and Augmented Reality graphics using advanced, industry-standard design software from the Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
Students complete a BTEC Level 2 award that leads onto a BTEC Level 3 pathway in Years 12 & 13. Afterwards, students can study a design-related BA Hons Degree at University, which can lead to careers in Graphic Design, UI/UX, Animation, Digital Marketing, App Development, Illustration or Games Design.
The course is 100% coursework with no exam. Students will be assessed on two units of work, presented in digital format and internally assessed:
Unit 6: Digital Print Production
In this unit, students use digital software and creative thinking to produce and develop a range of graphic outcomes for print purposes. Students learn about the theory of visual communication such as, colour, typography, copy, layout and hierarchy. Students use industry-standard software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Procreate, Dimension and Aero, producing high-quality print outcomes such as packaging, advertisements, social media graphics and promotional merchandise. This unit prepares students for a career in Graphic Design or Digital Illustration.
Unit 8: Animation Production
Animation is used for many purposes in the digital design industries including entertainment, advertising, video games, music videos, mobile phones and websites. Students learn about traditional and modern animation techniques such as stop motion, rotoscope, kinetic typography and CAD. Afterwards, they’ll be given a design brief that encourages them to create their own animated short using a technique of their choice, plus iPads and digital software such as Adobe Photoshop, Animate, Aero and Procreate. This unit prepares students for a career in Motion Graphics or Animation.
Unit 9: Web Production
In this unit, students design a prototype website in response to a design brief. Students learn about the theory of UI & UX, which is a key topic in this module. Students compare existing websites that serve different purposes, analysing the key features including page layout, use of motion, accessibility and call to action buttons. Application of this knowledge and understanding is later used to develop a website that functions appropriately and considers user experience (UX) alongside graphics interface design (UI). The final outcome is produced using Adobe XD alongside other digital software, used to produce original assets. This unit prepares students for a career in Web Development or UI/UX Design.
Unit 1: Research for a Digital Media product
This unit is an assignment set by the exam board that is internally assessed. The unit focuses on research techniques. Students use a wide range of research methods to investigate a solution in response to a design brief. Through analysis of existing solutions and the development of new ideas, students propose a final outcome. In BTEC Digital Design, this unit will focus on digital marketing techniques and the promotion of products and services through digital channels. Students learn about digital marketing theory alongside industry processes, including the development of innovative solutions and pitching to a client. This unit prepares students for a career in Digital Marketing or Project Management.
This course is great for students who love using and learning the most up-to-date digital software. It’s also great for students who are creative thinkers and have a passion for designing innovative outcomes. The classroom is set up to run like a design agency, whereby students' tasks reflect those completed by industry experts. Students produce work in response to engaging design briefs and learn practical skills in a range of digital specialisms. BTEC Digital Design is great for students who prefer continuous assessment with no written exam and is a portfolio building course that enables students to study a design pathway at university, as it provides the required evidence.
