The primary aims of the Cambridge iGCSE in Computer Science are to:

• • Develop an understanding of the main principles of problem solving using computers

  • Develop computer-based solutions to problems using algorithms and a high-level programming language (Python)

  • Learn to to effectively test and evaluate computing solutions

  • Appreciate current and emerging computing technologies, the benefits of their use and recognise their potential risks

​Students will learn how to develop solutions using the Python programming language. However, studying Computer Science is more than just learning how to code. We will learn how computers work at a fundamental level and how we can use computers and computer systems to solve real world problems. We will also develop the ability to effectively communicate complex ideas in a technically accurate and precise way.

Success in the field of Computer Science reaps rewards beyond a good GCSE result. It is a pathway to solving some of the biggest problems that face humanity and give students the tools to contribute to society in paradigm shifting ways.

The assessment is by written papers, but the learning will be done in a mainly practical way via problem-solving and programming. Questions will not revolve around pure recall. 

To be successful in Computer Science, students must be willing to develop their problem-solving skills. This requires practice both inside and outside of the classroom. Curiosity, patience, self-motivation and attention to detail are major qualities of a good computer scientist.

Do not worry if you did not choose Computer Science as an option in Year 9 as we will be completing a  programming basics refresher. 

Students who take this course will be able to specialise further by taking the Computer Science course offered at IB and then on to university. Computer Science is pervasive in almost all fields of research and study. It can be invaluable even for students not intending​ to pursue the subject for further study.
