Personal Portfolio (Coursework) - Component 1:

You will produce 2 Components over the two-year course. The Personal Portfolio is worth 60% of the overall mark and the Externally Set Assignment - Component 2 is worth 40%. 

Externally Set Assignment - Component 2: 

The externally set assignment is a given theme set by the exam board. You are given a question paper eight school weeks prior to the exam and must produce research and development studies during this period in preparation for the exam. At the end of this preparatory period, there will be a 10-hour controlled assessment period, over two days, when a final outcome should be produced using a medium or media of your choice, for example, a painting or sculpture.  This externally set assignment is worth 40% of the overall mark. 

It is about self-motivation and having an adventurous and creative approach to making art and fully understanding the art making processes. You must be able to work cooperatively and be willing to give and receive constructive criticism. The course requires you to explore and experiment with a wide variety of skills and techniques and learn about the work of different artists and work in their style.   Therefore, you must be someone who enjoys art and is self-motivated.

This isn't extra homework; it's your dedicated time to experiment, get 1-to-1 support from teachers, and use our fantastic facilities. Most students complete the course successfully without having to do any work at home.

• In Years 10 - 11: You can study GCSE Fine Art and you can also choose to study BTEC Digital Design right from the start. Taking both gives you an amazing foundation in both traditional art and modern digital skills.

• In Years 12 - 13: You can advance to IB Visual Arts and continue your BTEC Digital Design journey.
